Every Tulalara kaftan begins long before it reaches your hands. It starts in a small studio in Bali, where skilled artisans transform raw fabric into something truly extraordinary using the ancient art of tie dye Bali. Here's an intimate look at what goes into creating each piece — from the very first fold to the final stitch.
Step 1: Choosing the Fabric
It all begins with fabric selection. Our artisans work with lightweight, breathable materials — primarily rayon and silk — chosen for their ability to drape beautifully and absorb hand-mixed dyes with depth and vibrancy. Each bolt of fabric is inspected by hand before a single fold is made.
Step 2: Designing the Pattern
There are no computers involved at this stage. The pattern lives in the artisan's hands and memory. Depending on the design — whether it's a sweeping ombre, a starburst, or an organic abstract — the fabric is folded, pleated, or twisted in a specific way. This step requires precision and years of practice; a slight variation in the fold changes the entire outcome.
Step 3: Tying
Once folded, sections of the fabric are tightly bound with rubber bands or natural string. These bindings act as a resist — wherever the fabric is tied, the dye cannot reach, creating the signature light patterns that make each piece unmistakably handmade. The tighter the bind, the crisper the contrast.
Step 4: Hand-Dyeing
This is where the magic happens. The bound fabric is submerged into dye baths — sometimes one colour, sometimes several in sequence. Our artisans carefully control the timing, temperature, and saturation of each dip. Colours are layered to create dimension: a deep teal bleeding into turquoise, a warm coral fading into blush. No two dye sessions are ever exactly the same.
Step 5: Rinsing & Sun-Drying
After dyeing, the fabric is thoroughly rinsed to remove excess colour, then hung to dry in the open Balinese air. Natural sunlight helps set the dye and brings out the full richness of the colours. This step can take several hours depending on the humidity and the weight of the fabric.
Step 6: The Reveal
The bindings are carefully cut away — and this is the moment every artisan looks forward to. The pattern unfolds for the first time, unique and unrepeatable. Even experienced craftspeople feel a sense of anticipation at this stage. What's revealed is never quite what was expected, and that's exactly the point.
Step 7: Cutting & Sewing
The dyed fabric is then cut and sewn into the kaftan silhouette — our signature relaxed, flowing shape designed for effortless resort wear. Seams are carefully aligned to honour the dye pattern, and finishing details like necklines and hems are completed by hand.
Step 8: Quality Check
Before any piece leaves the studio, it's inspected for colour consistency, stitching quality, and overall finish. Only pieces that meet our standards make it into a Tulalara order.
Handmade Means One of a Kind
Because every kaftan is hand-dyed using traditional tie dye Bali techniques, no two pieces are identical. The slight variations in colour and pattern aren't imperfections — they're proof of the human hands behind every piece. When you wear Tulalara, you wear something that exists nowhere else in the world.
